Beyond Replika: Best AI Girlfriends for Romantic Roleplay (2026)

This page is for former Replika users who miss the romantic roleplay it used to allow, or who want a companion that remembers more and costs less. Replika removed erotic roleplay in early February 2023 and, after protests from users, brought it back on March 24, 2023 only for accounts created before February 1, 2023. Below we explain what Replika offers today and then compares seven alternatives on content rules, price, cancellation terms and privacy, so you can pick the one that matches what you actually miss.

What Replika offers today
Replika's terms of service (updated March 30, 2026, checked October 2026) describe four levels:
- Free: "limited access to the Services".
- Replika Pro: relationship status, premium activities, Replika selfies, image generation and voice messaging.
- Replika Ultra: smarter conversations, Replika's self-reflections and saving messages to memory.
- Replika Platinum: real-time video recognition and a training mode.
The same terms require users to be 18 or older and include content that is "vulgar, obscene, pornographic" in their list of prohibited content. For a former user that means two things: a romantic relationship status is a paid Pro feature, and the written rules do not allow explicit content. Whether accounts created before February 2023 still get the older behavior today, we could not confirm from Replika's public pages.
Price: Replika's US App Store listing (checked October 2026) shows in-app purchases of $7.99 and $14.99 monthly, $49.99 and $69.99 yearly and $89.99 for Replika Platinum, plus gem packs, but does not say which plan each price belongs to. Subscriptions renew until you cancel them where you bought them, and the terms say sales are final except where EU or Brazilian law requires otherwise.
Privacy: Replika's privacy policy (May 27, 2026) scored B, 12 of 16 in our scorecard, tied for the best grade. It says messages are processed for up to 60 days after the contract ends. Italy's data protection authority fined Replika's developer, Luka Inc., €5 million in April 2025.
Our take: rated 4.3 / 5 overall in our full Replika review, but a limited fit for romantic roleplay: Replika is built as a supportive friend, its terms prohibit pornographic content and relationship status is a paid Pro feature.

The alternatives in detail
Nomi.ai: the closest match for most former Replika users
Nomi, run by Glimpse.ai, Inc. in Maryland, sells the same idea Replika did: one companion that remembers you. Its homepage (checked October 2026) describes short, medium and long-term memory, voice messages and hands-free calls, group chats, and relationship styles from friend to girlfriend, boyfriend or mentor. It says Nomi is meant to "remain unfiltered and uncensored". You can start for free without a credit card; its help wiki describes a free plan of 50 messages a day with no time limit. Web prices appear only after sign-in; its US App Store listing has Standard at $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year, and a Launch Plan at $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year (checked October 2026).
Cancel where you subscribed (on the web: Profile, Subscription, Manage, Cancel). Nomi's refund policy says there are no refunds except at its discretion. If you downgrade, you keep your Nomis and one-on-one chat, while group chats, video and voice become read-only. Privacy: C (9 of 16). The policy says deleting your account removes personal information within about 28 days, but it does not address sensitive data, which matters for intimate chats.

Kindroid: memory and calls, with a card-required trial
Kindroid, operated by Beautifully Incorporated in Los Angeles, is the other memory-first option. Its homepage (checked October 2026) describes a backstory you write plus "long-term memory that recalls past conversations", text and voice messages, voice and video calls, selfies, group chats and shared Rooms in beta. It says you must be 18 or older, and its moderation guidelines explicitly allow NSFW content and erotic roleplay.
The money side needs care. Kindroid's subscription help page (checked October 2026) describes two different things. New accounts get a one-time free preview: 50 messages (15 in some regions), 5 selfies and 5,000 audio credits. Separately, a 3-day premium trial needs a payment method, starts with 150,000 audio credits and turns into a paid subscription unless you cancel in time. Plans bill monthly, quarterly or yearly, but the price appears only at checkout, and Ultra and MAX memory add-ons cost extra. Sales are final, with refunds only at Kindroid's discretion. Web subscribers cancel under Profile, Billing, Kindroid Standard Subscription, Manage.
Privacy: B (11 of 16). The policy says chats are encrypted so staff cannot read them in normal operation (we have not verified this), and the legal page gives two different minimum ages: 18 in the terms and 16 in the privacy policy.
Our take: worth a look if voice and video calls matter more to you than knowing the price up front. Set a reminder before the trial ends. Our app directory rates Kindroid 4.1 / 5; we have no full Kindroid review.
Character.AI: the free option, but not for romance
Character.AI works differently from Replika: instead of one companion, you chat with characters that users create. You can chat for free; c.ai+ costs $94.99 a year (shown against a regular $119.88, checked October 2026) and lists no ads, "best memory" and unlimited top models. The plan page says c.ai+ auto-renews yearly and can be canceled in settings at any time.
It is not a place for explicit roleplay. Its help center says pornographic content is against its terms of service. The minimum age is 13 (16 in the EEA and UK), and in October 2025 Character.AI announced the end of open-ended chat for users under 18. Privacy: C (9 of 16), but it is the only app in our scorecard whose documents describe an opt-out from AI training.
Our take: good for free, non-explicit storytelling; not a replacement for a romantic Replika.
Candy.ai, SecretDesires, OurDream.ai and Sweetdream.ai: adult-first apps
These four are built around generated images, video and explicit roleplay, and each charges for media through a credit system on top of the subscription. They have more in common with each other than with Replika, so pick one only if that is what you want. Prices are in the table above; cancel rules, refunds and privacy details are in each review:
- Candy.ai (4.2 / 5): the best privacy grade of the four (B); refunds only within 24 hours. Candy.ai review.
- SecretDesires (4.3 / 5): the lowest monthly price with unlimited messaging (Pro); all sales final outside the EU. SecretDesires review.
- OurDream.ai (3.75 / 5): images and up to a minute of video from a monthly coin allowance; homepage encryption claims its privacy policy does not back up. OurDream.ai review.
- Sweetdream.ai (4.5 / 5): live phone calls and video calls with featured characters; no monthly plan, unclear renewal and a D privacy grade. Sweetdream.ai review.

How to switch without paying twice
- Cancel Replika where you bought it: the App Store, Google Play or Replika's website, before the renewal date rather than counting on a refund. Replika's terms say you can drop to the free plan without deleting your account.
- Decide what happens to your data: Replika's privacy policy says you can delete your account in its settings and that messages are processed for up to 60 days after the contract ends.
- Start free where you can: Nomi (50 messages a day) and Character.AI let you start without paying, and SecretDesires has a limited free plan. Kindroid's free preview is small, and its premium trial needs a card and converts automatically.
- Read the credit system before you buy: Candy.ai (tokens), SecretDesires (Hearts), OurDream.ai (DreamCoins) and Sweetdream.ai (tokens) include a monthly allowance for images and other extras. See our free vs. paid companions guide for what free plans usually leave out.
- Keep sensitive details out of chats: 14 of the 15 apps in our privacy scorecard describe no way to opt out of AI training; Character.AI is the exception.
Which alternative fits you
- You want your Replika relationship back, with memory and calls: start with Nomi.ai. Try Kindroid if you want video calls and accept a card-required trial.
- You want free storytelling and do not need romance: Character.AI.
- You want images and explicit roleplay: Candy.ai, SecretDesires, OurDream.ai or Sweetdream.ai, with the costs and privacy grades above in mind.
- You mostly want a supportive friend: Replika itself may still fit; our Replika review covers it.
One caution applies to every app here. In a Stanford study of 1,131 Character.AI users, companionship-focused use was associated with lower well-being, especially intensive use by people with small offline social networks. The study shows a correlation, not a cause, but it is a good reason to use these apps alongside people rather than instead of them. If you are new to the topic, start with what an AI girlfriend is.
