Memory is what separates a companion from a chatbot: whether she still knows your job, your plans and the tone of your relationship next week. Every app in this category says its companion "remembers". Very few explain how, how much, or what you can do when it gets something wrong. This page compares what the companies actually document, which memory controls they give you, and what happens to stored memories when you delete your account.
What this page is based on: Nomi.ai's own memory announcements and guides and Replika's help center articles on memory (both checked October 2026); the memory statements on the homepages of Candy.ai, SecretDesires, Sweetdream.ai and OurDream.ai, Candy.ai's help center and Kupid.ai's plan table (checked October 2026); Nomi's US App Store prices and SecretDesires' subscription page (both October 2026) and other prices as listed in July 2026; Nomi's and Replika's cancellation rules (checked September 2026); and the deletion and retention findings in our AI companion privacy scorecard (policies reviewed September 19, 2026). We did not run a timed recall test for this page, so the ranking reflects what each company documents and the controls it gives you, not measured recall.

Nomi.ai is our pick. It documents the most complete memory system of the apps compared here and gives you two ways to see and correct what your companion has stored.
- Nomi.ai: several memory layers, plus Shared Notes and Mind Map 2.0 to view and edit what is stored.
- Replika: a Memory tab where you can read, add and delete individual memories.
- SecretDesires: summarizes older chats into key memories; no memory editor described.
- Kupid.ai: its plan table states a memory window: the last 30 messages on Free, the last 100 on Pro and an infinity symbol on Ultra; no memory editor described.
- Candy.ai, Sweetdream.ai, OurDream.ai: memory is advertised but barely explained on their public pages.
Three kinds of AI memory, and why they fail differently
- In-session memory: what the model can still "see" of the current conversation, its context window. In a very long chat, early messages fall out of that window, which is why a companion can lose track of something you said at the start of the evening.
- Cross-session memory: facts saved between conversations as notes or summaries and pulled back in when they seem relevant. This retrieval step is often called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). It fails when the app saves the wrong detail or does not retrieve the right one.
- Identity memory: keeping the character's personality and the shape of your relationship stable over time. When this slips, you get "persona drift". A 2024 research paper found that chat models can drift significantly from their instructions within eight rounds of conversation, so long-term consistency depends on how an app keeps reminding the model who the character is.
The useful questions for any app: what does it save, can you see it, can you fix it, and what happens to it when you leave?

The apps in detail
Nomi.ai: the most documented memory (our pick)
Nomi.ai, run by Glimpse.ai, Inc. in Maryland, explains its memory in more detail than any other company here. It describes short-, medium- and long-term memory and calls the long-term part "infinite". In December 2024 it added an Identity Core, which it says lets each Nomi "more actively decide what things are important for them to remember". After a March 2025 memory update, Nomi said its companions "can now remember what happened 1,000+ messages ago much more clearly". These are the company's own claims; no app in this category publishes recall rates that anyone could check.
What sets Nomi apart is control. Shared Notes, including a backstory field, let you write down what your Nomi should prioritize. Nomi's own guide adds a fair caveat: Shared Notes are optional and "they're not a magical button", so the way you talk to your Nomi has to match them. Mind Map 2.0 (October 2025) shows one part of what your Nomi knows as a graph and as a searchable table, and you can edit an entry to correct a mistake.
Nomi is free to start without a credit card, and its help wiki describes a free plan of 50 messages a day with no time limit. Web prices are shown only after login; its US App Store listing has Standard at $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year and the Launch Plan at $9.99 a month (checked October 2026). See our Nomi.ai review. Its cancellation page (checked September 2026) says you cancel where you subscribed, refunds are at Nomi's discretion, and after a downgrade you keep your Nomis and one-on-one chats while group chat, video and voice become read-only. On privacy, Nomi gets a C (9/16) in our scorecard: deleting your account deletes personal information within about 28 days, except material in its training or communications archives, which the policy says is no longer attributable to you. The policy also does not address sensitive data such as health or sex life, which companion chats often contain.
Best for: a long-running companion you are willing to curate. Our overall rating: 4.6/5.
Replika: the simplest memory you can edit
Replika, run by Luka, Inc. in San Francisco, has a Memory tab. Its help center says some memories are visible there while others draw on "patterns from your overall conversation history". You can open each saved memory and remove it, add your own, and update details. Replika warns that deleting memories may affect its ability to recall certain details and suggests leaving the system to work automatically.
Two limits matter. The app shows only the past four months of chat history, although Replika says memories and diary entries remain. And you cannot delete your whole message history without deleting your account, which erases everything permanently. Its privacy policy says messages are processed for up to 60 days after the contract ends, and Replika gets a B (12/16) in our scorecard, tied with Candy.ai for the highest score. You cancel through the App Store, Google Play or the web settings; its terms say all sales are final.

SecretDesires: memory by summary
SecretDesires, run by Playhouse Media, explains its approach in its homepage FAQ: "Recent conversations stay fresh and detailed, while older chats get naturally summarized into key memories", and each companion keeps its own memory of your relationship. That is a plain description of how most long-term memory works: detail fades into summaries. It does not describe a way to view or edit those memories. The free plan lists daily message and image limits; unlimited messaging starts with Pro at $7.99 a month, with Ultra at $13.99 and Max at $19.99 (checked October 2026). Privacy grade: C (8/16), and its policy says popular public characters may be kept after you delete your account.

Kupid.ai, Candy.ai, Sweetdream.ai and OurDream.ai: little detail on memory
These four advertise memory but explain little about it. Kupid.ai at least states how many recent messages each plan keeps in view; the other three do not say how much a companion keeps or for how long, and none of the four describes a way to see or correct stored memories (public pages checked October 2026). That does not prove their memory is poor. It means you have to judge it yourself, with the checklist below.
- Candy.ai (EverAI Limited, Malta): its homepage says it is "built with advanced personality modeling and memory retention". Its help center says detailed memory is tied to the active chat and that Reset Chat starts the conversation fresh; the higher Premium Plus tier lists 20 memory slots. Plans cost $12.99 a month or about $3.99 a month billed yearly ($47.88), as listed in July 2026. Its privacy policy keeps account data for three years after your last activity unless you request deletion, and says third-party AI providers may receive the content of your messages (privacy B, 12/16). - Sweetdream.ai: its homepage promises "Smart Memory" in which "desires, limits, and habits stay remembered". Its privacy policy lets you delete single conversations or your entire chat history and deletes inactive accounts after two years, but it got the lowest grade in our scorecard (D, 7/16). - Kupid.ai (SNB Technologies LTD, Cyprus): the homepage mentions memory only in a customer testimonial, but the plan table is specific: under "She remembers" it lists the last 30 messages on Free, the last 100 on Pro and an infinity symbol on Ultra. Read literally, details older than that window can drop out unless you pay for Ultra. No way to view or edit memories is described. - OurDream.ai: its homepage says your companion "uses advanced memory systems" and "remembers past chats and grows with you over time". How to check an AI girlfriend's memory yourself
Because no company publishes recall figures, your own check is the most reliable one. A delayed follow-up works best:
- In your first chat, mention three to five specific facts: a pet's name, a date, a plan, a preference. Make them unusual enough that a lucky guess is unlikely.
- Come back a day later and again after a week. Ask indirectly ("What should I pack for Saturday?") rather than "What's my dog's name?", so you test understanding, not just lookup.
- If the app has a memory view (Nomi's Shared Notes or Mind Map, Replika's Memory tab), check whether the facts were saved correctly. Fix one and see whether the next replies follow the correction.
- Watch the personality, not just the facts. If her tone or backstory changes between sessions, that is persona drift.
- Check the plan limits first. A free plan with a daily message cap may run out before memory has anything to work with.
- Before sharing health, sexual or financial details, check what deletion actually does in our privacy scorecard. Better memory means more of what you say is stored.
Is the AI girlfriend with the best memory also the smartest?
Not automatically. Memory is one part of what makes a companion feel intelligent. The others are staying coherent through a long conversation, reading your mood and adapting to how you write, and companies rarely document those at all. "Best overall" also weighs images, voice, price and content rules, which is why our overall ranking does not simply follow memory.
