What Is an AI Girlfriend? How It Works, Costs and Risks (2026)

An AI girlfriend is a chatbot set up to act as a romantic partner. You talk to a character with a name, a face and a personality, and a large language model writes her replies. Most apps add some memory of past chats, generated pictures and sometimes a voice, and most charge a monthly fee or sell tokens for the extras. Under the hood it is the same kind of technology as ChatGPT, given a persona and wrapped in an app that is built to keep you talking.

So, What Exactly Is an AI Girlfriend?
The term covers apps and websites where you chat with a character presented as your girlfriend. "Virtual girlfriend" means the same thing. "AI companion" is the wider term: the same apps often offer boyfriends, friends and fictional characters too, and many people use general chatbots such as ChatGPT in a similar way. Some surveys, such as Pew's, count both kinds, which is one reason usage figures vary so much.
What you typically get, in some combination:
- A character: picked from a gallery or built by you, with a look, a personality and a backstory. Our guide to creating an AI girlfriend covers the builders.
- Some memory of earlier chats, from a few saved facts to a searchable history.
- Generated pictures of the character, often paid per image with tokens or credits.
- Voice messages or calls on some apps, and video on a few.
- Content settings: some apps allow adult roleplay for adults, others filter it out.
What you do not get is a person. The character has no feelings and no life between your messages. It produces the reply that best fits the conversation and its instructions. That can feel warm and attentive, and it is still a program run by a company.
How AI Girlfriends Work
Few apps publish their exact setup, so details differ from app to app. The typical design has six parts:

When you send a message, the app bundles it with the persona, the recent conversation and any memories it retrieves, runs the bundle through its filters, hands it to the model and checks the reply before you see it. Pulling saved information back into the prompt is often done with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which NVIDIA describes as "a technique for enhancing the accuracy and reliability of generative AI models with information from specific and relevant data sources" (NVIDIA).
This design explains the two most common complaints. Forgetting happens when a detail falls out of the context window and was never saved to long-term memory. Personality changes happen when the company changes the model, the persona rules or the filters, which it can do at any time. When Replika removed erotic roleplay in early February 2023, long-time users told Reuters their companions suddenly felt like different people (timeline entry).
From ELIZA to Replika: A Short History
People confided in chatbots long before language models. In January 1966, MIT's Joseph Weizenbaum published ELIZA, a program that imitated a therapist by spotting keywords and turning the user's own words into questions; his secretary asked him to leave the room so she could talk to it in private. Replika grew out of a 2016 memorial chatbot that Eugenia Kuyda built from the text messages of her late friend Roman Mazurenko, and it became publicly available in November 2017. The current wave followed Character.AI's public beta in September 2022 and the launch of ChatGPT on November 30, 2022, which made fluent, open-ended conversation widely available. Who Uses AI Girlfriends, and Why
Surveys ask different questions, so their numbers differ, but none of them describes a tiny niche:
- 10% of U.S. adults use AI chatbots for emotional support or advice and 4% for companionship, in a February 2026 survey that includes general chatbots (Pew Research Center, 2026).
- 31% of men and 23% of women aged 18 to 30 in the U.S. say they have chatted with an AI romantic companion; the sample was an online quota sample, not a probability sample (Wheatley Institute, 2025).
- "Girlfriend" is the most common theme in companion app names: 17% of active companion apps use the word, against 4% for "boyfriend" (Appfigures data via TechCrunch, 2025).

Do They Help With Loneliness? What the Research Says
The short answer: it depends on how they are used, and the research is still young. Three studies show the range:
- A peer-reviewed survey of 14,721 Japanese adults found AI companion use associated with higher life satisfaction, happiness and sense of purpose, most strongly among lonely people. It was a one-time survey, so it cannot show cause (Technology in Society, 2026).
- In a four-week randomized trial with 981 U.S. adults using ChatGPT, the people who chose to use it more had consistently worse outcomes on loneliness, socialization, emotional dependence and problematic use. It is a preprint, and the link with heavier use is correlational (MIT Media Lab and OpenAI, 2025).
- A Stanford study of 1,131 Character.AI users linked companionship-focused use, especially intensive use by people with small offline social networks, to lower well-being (Stanford HAI, 2026).
Our reading: as occasional fun or comfort, an AI girlfriend looks low-risk for most adults; as a replacement for people, the evidence points the other way, though none of these studies proves cause and effect. A chatbot is not a therapist, and the American Psychological Association advises against relying on chatbots for psychological treatment (APA advisory, 2025). Risks to Know Before You Start

Most apps let you start for free, with limits on messages, pictures or memory. Paid plans for four apps we review (prices can differ by region and change often):

Check the refund rules before you pay, because most are strict. In the terms and help pages we read in September 2026, Candy.ai refunds only within 24 hours, to a card, if no more than 20 tokens were used (EU and UK buyers get a 14-day withdrawal right on a first purchase); Nomi gives no refunds except at its discretion; Joi.com refunds only fraud or a mistaken one-time purchase within 14 days; and Replika treats all sales as final. The Rules That Now Apply
Companion apps are starting to be regulated. California's SB 243, in force since January 1, 2026, requires a notice that the chatbot is not human where users could mistake it for a human, and a published suicide and self-harm protocol. New York's companion law, in force since November 5, 2025, requires a crisis protocol and a not-human reminder at least every three hours. In the EU, Article 50 of the AI Act has required since August 2, 2026 that users be told they are interacting with AI. Our laws tracker lists the rest by country and state.
Choosing Your First App: A Checklist
- Know why you want one. Fun, practice, company at night or adult roleplay each point to different apps.

- Read the pricing page, including what tokens buy and the refund rule, before you enter a card.
- Read the privacy policy for four things: who runs the app, whether chats train AI models and whether you can opt out, how to delete your data, and what it says about sensitive data. Our privacy scorecard has done this for 15 apps.
- Start on the free tier. Mention a detail, come back the next day and see whether she remembers it.
- Keep your identity out. No full name, address, employer, financial details or photos of other people.
- Set limits on time and money, and keep up your offline relationships.
Our Take
An AI girlfriend is a well-made illusion: a language model with a persona, a memory and a business model behind it. Used with open eyes, it can be fun and, for some people, comforting. Know what you pay, assume your chats are stored and may train models, and step back if it starts to crowd out people instead of adding to your life.
